Windows 10 end of support: what to do now

Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. Your PC still works, but here's what changed and what to do.

Updated October 2026

What end of support means

Since 14 October 2025, Windows 10 no longer gets free feature updates or technical support from Microsoft. Without security updates, a PC becomes more exposed to new threats over time.

Option 1: Extended Security Updates

Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates (ESU) for home users. In June 2026 Microsoft extended the consumer programme to 12 October 2027. You need Windows 10 version 22H2 and a Microsoft account. It's free if you turn on Windows Backup or redeem Microsoft Rewards points; otherwise it costs $30 for a year.

Option 2: Upgrade to Windows 11

If your PC meets the requirements (TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and a supported processor), moving to Windows 11 keeps you fully supported. Check with Microsoft's PC Health Check app. Many Windows 10 Pro keys can also activate Windows 11 Pro on a compatible PC.

Option 3: Keep Windows 10 carefully

If you must stay, keep your browser and antivirus up to date, avoid running unknown files, and plan your move before ESU ends.
